Luke Clayton here. There's no official hog hunting season in Texas, many of us hunt them year-around but if there were, from now until warm weather would be it. More hogs are harvested during the next three months than any other time of year.
If you would like to have some fresh pork to add to your venison for sausage, by all means, keep those corn feeder going a couple more months. Hogs are very smart critters, and become nocturnal when pressured. I have hunted them for years and, look back, have shot most of them during the last hour of daylight, and sometime just after dark. I use a little lght called a Feedlight www.ultramaticfeeders.com that attaches to the feeder or a post or tree nearby. When the sun sets, the lights come on and illumiated the area under the feeder, not so much as to spook hogs, but just enought to see for shooting with a bow or rifle.
Try souring some corn to attract hots to your stand. Dig holes with a post hole digger about 30 inches deep, fill them with soured corn and, as an added attractant, pour a packet of Kool Aid on top. (Rasphberry is favored my most hunters, I truly don't know if the hogs care what flavor!!)
Nothing like a good hog hunt to shake those 'after deer season' blues. We'll talk about making sausage and curing ham at home next time! Good Hunting and God Bless.. Luke Clayton
